Capel Manor is a centre of horticultural excellence – both the college and the gardens - which people naturally abbreviate the name to ‘Capel’, so it’s the C that’s the important bit. It's a mix of the traditional and the modern – right up from its architecture to its gardens. So we created quite a modernist C from petals to fulfil the ‘modern’ and horticultural sides of Capel Manor. To remain true to Capel Manor’s unique mix of the modern and the traditional, we wanted to find a traditional style font to juxtapose with the C so we chose Trajan, which is based on the letterforms of capitalis monumentalis or Roman square capitals, as used for the inscription at the base of Trajan's Column from which the typeface takes its name.
